Through Bars

Through the bars, M. Mair, original art

Through the Bars, Margaret Mair, original art.

Come closer
I cannot see you
Through these bars
Your faces are dark
Your eyes are hidden
Your voices fall against
My straining ears
In garbled mutters.

Come closer
You cannot see me
In the murky darkness
Peering at your
Hope and light
Cannot hear me
Over the rush
Of your own words
Cannot know me
Except as not you.

Come closer
Look deeper
Hear sweeter
Words spoken
In many colors
By many voices
Opening into
A rainbow of stories
That shine
Through the gloom
And illuminate
Our faces.
