Who Wounds a Child

Swimming in Darkness, Margaret Mair, original art.

Something dies
In a child left hurt
And desperately alone
And something terrible
Is born;
An agony
We cannot soothe,
A pain that
Will never die,
A grief that
Cannot heal.
The body remembers
What the mind cannot
And carves the memory
Into every action,
Into every feeling,
Through the moments
And days and years
Of their lives.
How cruel the hands,
How wicked the mind,
How absent the feelings,
The simple love of others,
In anyone who
Would so terribly
Wound a child.

  1. Such pain in the world, and it does follow many of us through the years.

  2. What amazes me is how deeply The scars are for the innocent young. Very touching poem
