Over the Wall

Over the Wall, Margaret Mair, original art

On the other side of the day
The risen sun sets again
And darkness creeps in;
On the other side of the year
Autumn rolls into winter
And days grow shorter;
On the other side of a life
An old man remembers a child
Gazing into the distance
Musing about escaping
To the beckoning there
On the other side of the wall,
About slipping over
The dark stone barrier
Hewn with love
And built with care
In search of a dangerous freedom
Full of distant mysteries
Somewhere down the tumbling hill
Along the rough track
That ran by the swelling stream
Into stormy seas
Where waves pounded the shore
In a rough rhythm that called
To the wildness that beat in
His dreaming heart.
He remembers the boy
And he smiles.

    The older I get, the more of similar memories come to my mind. Very thoughtful, very touching.
