Our World, Our Hands

The Paris Climate Conference has ended with an agreement that the world must work to change the energy trajectory we have been following, must adopt and create technologies that allow us to live in harmony with the small planet we inhabit. Now we hope.

Fiery red surrounds
The watery world
These faceless figures
Hug and hold,
Shield with bodies
Draped in garments
Green as
Fertile hills,
Yellow
As falling sunlight,
As sprouting daffodils
That welcome spring
Time, when
Hope comes dreaming
Of a flourishing future
Where loving care
Is enough
To keep
Our world
Alive and thriving.

On Being Reborn

After the events in Paris last night my thoughts circle, my words falter. Too much pain, too much blood – in Paris and in so many places around the world. Here, last night, was just a small taste of what the refugees flee and victims of terrorist all over the world face daily, and yet these events were so great to so many of us.

May all that is best in the human spirit rise above such horrors. My thoughts are with those who have been killed, my heart goes out to all those upon whom pain has been inflicted, my prayers go out to all of us.

Look.
The darkness is not complete
The water does not engulf
The waiting body
Curled fetus-like
Around the heart
Of its matter.
It will rise again,
Pressing down
Against those strong feet
Caressing the ground,
Raising those
Protecting hands
From the lifting head;
Now it is
Gathering strength
As it waits
For the fog to part,
For the light to dawn,
For the water to recede,
For the ground to become
Solid again.

Emerging – If Earth’s Our Womb…

April 22nd is a day set aside for us to remember our Earth and all she has given us. But we depend on her, on her life-giving water and fertile land, her air and clouds and sun and protective atmosphere, to sustain us every single day. Every day that we open our eyes to the rising sun is Earth Day. May we always remember to respect and care for her.

If earth’s our womb
We must be born
Of fire
And molten rock
And steam
And push our way
Out through
The tops of mountains
With lungs that yearn
To breathe sweet air,
Eyes that dream
Of soft sunlight,
Of sparkling springs,
Blue sky and
Plants growing green,
And feet that long
To walk on
Quiet ground.

Butterfly Hands

Shared again on International Women’s Day, on a young girl dreaming:

A young girl’s
Butterfly hands,
Set free in
The enclosing darkness,
Dance expressively
Before the glow
Of the lamplight
Creating shadows
Against the fading wall,
Shadows enfolding
Rose-colored dreams
And midnight-blue secrets
Born in her heart.
Linked, become
Wonder-full wings
Taking colorful flight
As they lift her wishes
High into
The magic night
Where their light
Can flicker
And dance
Among the stars
She wishes on.

Love has many colours:
Strong reds
Inflaming
The heart’s
Deepest rhythms;
Hot oranges,
Flickering with
Fiery feelings;
Sunny yellow bursts
Of bright laughter
Shared;
Quiet blues,
Deep greens,
Where friendship
Rests;
Comforting
Soft greys
Quietly wrapping
Dear companions;
Rolling purples,
Soft magentas,
Deep blue-blacks
Of long time
Well spent
Together.
Colours to wrap
Our selves in,
Magic, like a
Rainbow.

A Star to Wish On…

A Star to Follow, Margaret Mair, original art

A Star to Follow, Margaret Mair, original art

In this wintry season
Days are short
And nights are long
And stars linger
Across the sky’s
Dark sweep,
Fragile as dreams,
Far away as wishes,
Fitful as memories,
Fantastic as gifts
Long hoped for
But never expected.
Our lifted eyes
Are captured
By their twinkling beauty
Reaching out to us
Across eons of time
And an infinity
Of space.
So many eyes,
So many wishes,
So many dreams
Held up toward them,
So much hope
In prayers raised
To the heavens
They call home,
Each and all
Bringing us together
Even if only
Up there
So very far away
From these places
We call home.
