Light Breaks the Darkness

Two faces: no dark without light, M. Mair, original art

Two Faces: no dark without light, Margaret Mair, original art

Until we see the light break
Across our shadowed world
We do not know what darkness is
Nor what lies hidden singing
Songs of fear and death beneath
The spreading folds of its cloak.
Until we clamber to the heights
And gaze down at a new-seen world
Spread fresh and wide below us
We do not know there is a there
So different from our here.
Until our hearts open wide
And our hands reach out to help
The uninvited stranger
Stealing cautiously into our lives
We cannot plumb the depths
Of our once fearful ignorance.
For as light breaks the darkness
And without up there is no down,
We can only understand
How little we know
When we finally turn to face
What we were so ignorant of.
