On the Wing and Away

On the Wing, Margaret Mair, original art

Between rolling waters
And cloud tossed skies
A solitary bird turns
On outstretched wings
Racing swift toward
A narrow stretch of sky
Where a tranquil wash
Of beckoning blue
Invites the restless
Sea-dwelling spirit
To dream of quiet,
Peace and rest.
Great the spirit and
Fragile the body
Tossed so lightly on the winds,
As if they would not rest again,
Could not be made prisoner again,
Freed now from
Gravity’s heavy bonds
To fly far, far
Beyond our seeing,
To live and love
And die tranquil
In a secret place
Beyond our knowing.

    • Thank you, Cynthia. I tried to reply early, but my mobile device was not talking nicely to WordPress. I wanted to say: it’s surprising the thoughts that rise to the surface, if we let them.
