Out of the Water

Younger,
Wishing for life,
I submerged myself
In the passing stream
And swam among
The swirling currents.
Older now,
Feet slipping
On submerged rocks
I emerge
From the water
That flowed around
And the time
That flowed past me,
Life time gone
Before I caught
Its meaning;
Knowing myself
More in years
But not much wiser
For all the days
Spent drifting
Unreflecting
In the stream
Of life.
Now,
Glancing down,
I see my reflection
And am caught
Hesitating,
Looking backward,
Stepping forward
On to new and
Higher ground.
