There is a Line…

Water’s Edge (2), Margaret Mair, original art

There is a line
Along the edge
Of our world,
A line that loops and curves
Around rocky buttresses
And shifts gently
With the changing tide
On softly sandy beaches,
A dream of a line
We sketch
Between land and water,
between firm and fluid,
Between certainty and change.
Surely the fortress
Of rocky outcroppings
Will stand strong
In our defence,
The encroaching water
Must surely stop
At our sand’s edge.
Unless –
Sudden storms
Thunder and blast
And fast rising waters
Break over and past
Those shattered borders;
Then we learn
That change will come
And give the rocks
That once stood strong
In the open air
The blessing of
A new and different life
In the rippled, fractured light
Under the water
On the other side
Of the line.
