Sometimes hope
Is hard,
Its fruits dry and
Bitter
As life struggles
To be,
Reaching
For a breath
Of air
And a glimpse
Of sky
And a warmth
Of sun
And a touch
Of green
Amid dirt and debris,
Rebuilding all that
Was lost
When the earth moved
Beneath
And the floods rose
Around
And death moved
Among
The people.
But hope
Rebuilds
Step by step,
Brick by brick,
Layer on layer,
With hand and heart –
Until something new rises
From the inhospitable ground
And she brings forth new life created
In joy and pain from the life that was.
