Earth on Fire

Earth on Fire, Margaret Mair, Original art

When the earth opens
And its molten entrails
Spill and spew and fill the air
With fire,
When lava flows down the mountainside
Like blood from a gaping wound
Overtaking the quiet skin of rock and soil
That stands between us
And fire,
When cool waters boil and
A writhing mist of hot steam rises
Above the intense heat
Of fire,
When gritty ash overtakes the air
And steals its light and purity
Till we are lit from underneath
By fire,
Then the earth gapes and groans,
Grumbles and rumbles and shudders
And we remember
Why we are afraid
Of fire.
