Shelter From the Storm

Shelter (Dreams of Horses), Margaret Mair, original art

The storm rolls in,
Clouds gathering,
Raindrops falling on
The sunny yellow dress
Draped thinly around
Your thin body.
Drops explode from
The hard dry ground
Against your feet and legs
As you run for
The low roofed shelter
By the well-worn
Pasture path
Where the watchful horse
Lies resting;
And you rest,
Wet face turned
Into the warm
Familiar smell of his
Oft-groomed coat,
As you borrow strength
From his strength
And comfort
From his gentleness
And find peace
In the rhythm
Of his breathing.
