For Man’s an Empty Vessel

Empty Vessel, Margaret Mair, original art

For this man’s
An empty vessel
Waiting to be filled
With marvellous adventures,
Seeing himself
Travelling a world
Of stark contrasts
Where canals may run
Quiet and controlled
Through gently cultivated fields
Or the sea beat roughly
On a wild green island’s
Sandy shore;
Seeing earth as both
A good woman
Offering simple comfort
And a changeable siren
Singing an invitation
To primitive fantasies;
Voyaging on
Until he wishes he were
A sated adventurer
Welcoming journey’s end
In some protected harbour
Or green-fringed bay
As yet unfound.
