This Terrible Bird (of War)

Let us fear this bird,
This terrible bird
That flies with death
And destruction
In the blood red
Of its wings;
This bird
With soulless eyes;
This frightful bird,
Soaring over us
On the hot winds
Of a screaming
Lust for power,
Spiralling
Ever higher
Into the gleaming
Skies of hatred.
Contorted
Like trapped animals
That fight to escape
The coming death
We struggle to hide
Our fear-filled bodies,
Then throw ourselves
Between death
And those we love,
Imagining ourselves
Places of safety.
Failing,
We can only
Scream into the depths
And heights of eternity,
Staring into the
Merciless face
Of this bringer
Of pain and death.
We cannot hide
From those
Terrible eyes,
We foolish and
Defiant nobodies
Waiting to be destroyed.
Yes, let us fear this bird
With its blood-red wings,
This terrible bird
Of war.
