Our Roots Run Wide and Deep, Margaret Mair, Original Art

A tree grows
As high and strong
As its roots
Run wide and deep,
Across Sand
And over rock
Seeking the richness of
Deep and fertile soil
In clefts and crevices
And water carved plains.
Reaching down for water
As branches and leaves
Reach upward for sunlight
Through the invisible exchange of air
And the blessing of rain.
Branches mix and mingle,
Each seeking their own space
To grow in, some
Twisting down to reach up, all
Tossed by winds and
Scarred by storms
And the unfathomed acts
Of passing strangers.
And so for us,
Fed by our roots
And lifting upward
As far as their strength
And our struggle
Will allow.
