There is Something…

Margaret Mair, Between Earth and Sky, Original Painting

On a bright blue day,
Here where
Boney fingers of land
Extend out into the water,
There is something
Enticing in
Ever-changing
Water colours
Around us.
Far away a deepening blue,
Close by a shallowed green,
Waves foaming mottled white
Around wetted rocks
Or making lace
That dances on waves
Behind the boat
Cutting happy through
The waves.
There is something
Womb-like
In the sound
Of its heartbeat
Against the shore;
Something soothing in
Its ceaseless movement
Lapping restless
On the sands;
Something thrilling,
Something frightening
In the pounding of
Its storm-driven waves
Crashing high and hard;
Something comforting
In the constant drumbeat
Of its advance and retreat.

And
There is something
Eternal
In the feel
Of the sky
Arching overhead
And falling around us
To the far watery horizon
On a bright blue day.

  1. I’ve never experienced the frightening aspect, but I’m happy to be reminded of all the pleasurable aspects.
