Summer is here, and this year it means I’m settling back on to our sailboat and getting ready to travel We’ll be cruising from Nova Scotia to Lake Ontario, watching the weather and taking our time. There will be a lot to see along the way, a surfeit of sea and coast and river, new places and new people.
I won’t paint much while we travel. Instead I’ll spend a lot of time looking. This is my time for observation and thought, for absorbing things that will later become part of my work.
But I will be taking my own kind of notes: Photographs, visual notes that remind me of light and color. Sketches, using pencils of all kinds and my favorite pens, that help me focus on what interests me, let me work out my ideas and feed my imagination along the way.
You could say that this is my time to take in the world around me. Every day I will see something I did not see the day before, wonder about something I don’t know yet, let my mind explore new thoughts in new places.
So I thought: why not share the things that touch me and inspire my art as we travel? Starting with the dance of light on the water…
