Pity is what tugs at our heart strings; pity moves us to act, to help, immediately.
Compassion is what keeps us helping – reaching out with understanding to make a lasting difference.
Let’s hope that as pity fades, compassion will grow, and Haiti will be able to rebuild using our help but her own people’s strengths and skills.
Acting with pity is easier; compassion demands more thought and more work, but in the end it provides a much stronger foundation on which to build and rebuild.
